When you pull clean glassware out of the dishwasher, you expect it to be sparkling clean. However, if your home has hard water, your glassware may look cloudy or hazy. Wiping the glasses and cups is rarely enough to remove the haze. So, how do you clean cloudy glassware?
Why Do My Glasses Look Cloudy After Washing?
Hard water is water that contains heavy minerals. These minerals usually include magnesium, calcium, sulfates and more. These minerals cling to the surfaces that they come in contact with. You might notice cloudy shower glass, for example.

While you use detergent in your dishwasher, the detergent won’t break down these minerals. You don’t want to drink out of cloudy glassware, and you don’t want to serve drinks to houseguests in them either. How do you clean cloudy glassware?
Method 1: Vinegar Soak for Mineral Deposits
Vinegar contains acetic acid, which is effective at breaking down mineral deposits. Gather all of the cloudy glassware together. Fill your sink with hot water and place your bottle of vinegar upright in the sink. After a few minutes, the vinegar will be warm.

Pour vinegar in the sink or a large bowl and immerse the glasses for at least an hour. Then, use a scrubber to wipe away the mineral residue. To complete the process, rinse the glasses with hot water, and dry them with a microfiber cloth.
Method 2: Baking Soda Paste for Stubborn Residue
If you don’t remove mineral deposits from your glassware regularly, the reside will build up. When this happens, your cleaning job becomes more difficult. A vinegar soak may not do the trick. If you’re dealing with stubborn residue, complete the vinegar soak method first.

Then, make a paste out of baking soda and water. Apply the paste to the entire glass. Then, use a microfiber cloth dipped in vinegar to scrub away the remaining residue. Use hot water to rinse the glasses before drying them with a cloth.
Method 3: Lemon and Salt for Shine Boost
Like vinegar, lemon is an acidic substance that can break down mineral deposits. Salt has mild abrasive properties that enhance the cleaning power of lemon juice.

Slice a fresh lemon in half. Dip the open face in a plate covered in a layer of salt. Use the salty lemon to scrub and shine the glassware. Then, rinse the glasses with hot water, and dry them with a clean cloth.
How Can I Tell If the Cloudiness Is Permanent or Not?
Hard water residue can etch glass over time. Etching gives the glass a permanently hazy look because the glass is physically damaged. This damage is irreversible.
If you clean the glassware and the glasses remain cloudy, try to scratch the film off with a sharp knife. If you cannot scratch residue off, you can assume that the glass is etched.
How to Prevent Cloudiness in the Future
The best way to prevent cloudy glassware in the future is to directly address the hard water coming into your home. Installing a water softener is an expensive yet effective solution to deal with this. Investing in a water softener has other benefits. It also prevents other related issues from developing, such as permanent damage to your shower glass, other dishes and pipes. It also makes your water clear and improves the taste.

Keep in mind that some glasses are more prone to etching than others, and some can be damaged in the dishwasher. Consider handwashing your glassware rather than running it through the dishwasher. If you wash dishes by hand, you can invest in a water filter for your sink rather than a whole-house water softener to save money.
If you do wash your dishes in the dishwasher, use the hottest water setting available. Take out the dishes while they are still wet, and hand dry them. This will remove some of the lingering hard water residue. In addition, don’t load too many dishes into the dishwasher at one time.
